Top 10 Highest Partnerships In Test Cricket History

From Sangakara to Javed Miandad and from Sir Gary Sobers to Javed Miandad, many of the cricket legend have been involved in the highest partnerships in test cricket history. They with their skills to hold on to the wicket and score runs, formed longest partnerships in cricket. Here is the list of Top 10 highest Partnership in Test Cricket history.

1. Kumara Sangakara and Mahela Jaywaradhnay

Former Sri Lankan batsmen Kumara Sangakara and Mahela Jaywaradhnay together hold the record for highest partnership in test cricket history. They jointly scored 624 runs for the 3rd wicket against South Africa at Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, Colombo from 27th July to 31st July 2021. It was the first Innings from Sri Lankan cricket team in that match. Therefore, Kumara Sangakara and Mahela Jaywaradhnay hold the top spot on our list of highest partnership in test cricket.

Kumara Sangakara scratched 287 runs on 457 balls which included 35 boundaries in that match. Whereas, his partner Mahela Jaywaradhnay scored 374 runs on 572 balls hitting 43 boundaries. This partnership by Sanga and Mahlea lead Sri Lanka to a victory of an innings and 153 runs. Mahela Jaywaradhnay was declared man of the match for his marvelous test innings.

2. Sanath Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama

Legendary Sri Lankan Opener Sanath Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama take the 2nd spot on our list. They jointy scored 576 runs for the 2nd wicket on 1139 balls against India. This was the first test between Sri Lanka and India which took place at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo from 2nd August to 6th August 1997. Therefore, Sanath Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama deserve a spot on our list.

Jayasuriya made 340 runs on 578 balls hitting 2 sixes and 36 boundaries. Whereas, his partner Mahanama scored 225 runs on 561 balls with the help of 27 boundaries. However, the match ended in a draw. But, Jayasuriya was declared Man of the Match for his stunning performance with the bat.

3. Andrew Jones and Martin Crowe

At number three we have former New Zealand batsmen Andre Jones and Martin Crowe. Together,  They scored 467 runs for the 3rd wicket in the 1st test of Sri Lanka tour of New Zealand 1991 series. The test match took place at Basin Reserve Ground, Wellington from 31st January to 4th February 2021. They scored the 3rd highest partnership of test cricket history in the 2nd innings of this match.

Andrew smashed 186 runs on 454 balls with the help of 15 boundaries. Whereas, his partner Martin Crowe accounted 299 runs on 523 balls including 3 sixes and 29 boundaries. However, this match ended a draw but Martin Crowe was declared the Man of the Match for his excellent batting display.

4. Bill Ponsford and Sir Don Bradman

Former Australian batsmen Bill Ponsford and Sir Don Bradman hold the 4th spot on our list. They jointly scored 451 runs for the 2nd wicket in 5th test of The Ashes 1934. The test match took place between England and Australia at Kennington Oval Ground, from 18th to 22nd August 1934. They recorded the 4th highest partnership in the first innings of this test.

Bill Ponsford went on to score 266 runs on 422 balls with the help of 27 boundaries. Whereas, his partner Sir Don Bradman (one of the greatest batsmen in cricket history) concluded 244 runs on 271 balls including 32 boundaries. As a result, Australia won the test by 562 runs.

5. Mudassar Nazar and Javed Miandad

Next we have Mudassar Nazar and Legendary Pakistan Batsmen Javed Miandad taking up the 5th spot on our list. Hand to hand, they scored 451 runs for the 3rd wicket against Sri Lanka in the 4th test of Sri Lanka tour of Pakistan 1983 series. Their partnership equaled the 49 years old record of Ponsford and Don Bradman. The match took place at Niaz Stadium, Hyderabad, Sindh from 14th January to 19th January 1983. They scored the 5th highest partnership in Test cricket history in the 1st innings of the match.

Mudassar Nazar scratched 231 with his bat facing 444 balls including one six and 21 boundaries. Whereas, his partner Javed Miandad went on to add 280 runs in the partnership on 460 balls hitting one six and 19 boundaries. As a result, Pakistan won the test by an innings and 119 runs. Javed Miandad was declared Man of the Match for his marvelous innings with the bat.

6. Adam Vogues and Shaun Marsh

At number 6 we have Adam Vogues and Shaun Marsh on our list. In 2015, they scratched 449 runs for 4th wicket against West Indies in the 1st test of West Indies tour of Australia series. The match took place at Bellerive Oval, Hobart from 10th to 14th December 2015. They scored the 6th highest partnership of test cricket history in the first innings of Australian team.

Adam Vogues scored 249 runs on 267 balls with the help of 33 boundaries. Whereas, his partner Shaun Marsh succeeded to get 182 runs facing 266 balls hitting one six and 15 boundaries. As a result, Australia won the test by an innings and 112 runs. Adam Vogues was declared Player of the match for his excellent performance with the bat.

7. Sir Conrad Hunte and Sir Garry Sobers

Next we have legendary West Indian batsmen Sir Conard Hunte and Sir Garry Sobers on our list. They recorded a partnership of 446 runs for the 2nd wicket in the 3rd test against Pakistan in the Pakistan tour of West Indies 1958 series. The test match took place at Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica from 28th February to 4th March 1958. The scored the 7th highest partnership in the 1st inning of the match.

sir Conrad Hunte collected 260 runs with the help of a six and 28 boundaries. Whereas, Sir Gary Sobers gathered 365 runs by hitting 38 boundaries. As a result, West Indies won the match by an innings and 174 runs. Sir Gary Sobers was announced Man of the Match for his excellent performance with the bat.

8. Marvan Atapattu and Kumar Sangakkara

Sri Lankan batsmen were once true stars in cricket, therefore we have a second pair of Marvan Atapattu and Kumar Sangakara on our list. They recorded 438 runs for the 2nd wicket in the 2nd test of Sri Lanka tour of Zimbabwe 2004 series. The test match took place at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo from 14th to 17th May 2004. They recorded the 8th highest partnership in test history in the 1st innings of Sri Lankan batting.

Marvan Attapattu gathered 249 runs on 324 balls with the help of one six and 36 baoundaries. Whereas, his partner and legendary Sri Lankan batsmen Kumara Sangakara scored 270 on 365 balls with the help of 2 sixes and 36 boundaries. Sri Lanka won the match by an innings and 254 runs. And, Sangakara was declared Man of the Match for his heroics with the bat.

9. Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera

It seems like Sri Lankan batsman were mighty with the bat in the past, as we have a third pair of Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera on our list. They together collected 437 runs for the 4th wicket in the 1st test of Sri Lanka tour of Pakistan 2009 cricket series. The match took place at National Stadium, Karachi, from 21st to 25th February 2009. They made the 9th highest partnership of test cricket history in the first innings of Sri Lankan batting.

Mahela Jayawardene recorded 240 runs on 424 balls and hit 32 boundaries during his innings. Whereas, his partner Thilan Samraweera collected 231 runs on 318 balls smashing 31 boundaries. However, the match ended in a draw. Pakistani Batsmen Younis Khan was declared Man of the Match for his 313 runs heroics in Pakistan innings.

10. Jacques Rudolph and Boeta Dippenaar

Finally, we have South African batsman Jacques Rudolph and Boeta Dippenaar making up the final spot on our list. They jointly put up a partnership of 429* for the 3rd wicket against Bangladesh in South Africa tour of Bangladesh 2003 cricket series. The match took place at MA Aziz Stadium, Chittagong from 24th to 27th April 2003. They made the 10th highest partnership in the 1st innings of South African batting.

Jacques Rudolph gathered 222 runs on 383 balls with the bat hitting 2 sixes and 29 boundaries. Whereas, his partner Boeta Dippenaar succeeded to get 177 runs on 369 balls with the help of 2 sixes and 25 boundaries. As a result, South Africa won the match by an innings and 60 runs. Jacques Rudolph was declared Man of the Match for his marvelous show with the bat.
