Football is the most popular sport in England with 3 million fans in the country. Not only men but also Women and Kids love to play and enjoy football. Currently, there are more than 40,000 football clubs in England. Due to bad performances, sometimes few of the football clubs face demotions. Here is the list of 10 Relegated English football clubs till 2023.

From Bristol Rovers FC to the Hereford United FC many English Football Clubs make it our list of Relegated English Football Clubs. With Management changes, poor Performances and inability to hold on to their League Status, many of these football clubs faced Relegations. Here is the list of 10 Relegated English football Clubs in 2023.
1. Bristol Rovers FC
Bristol Based English Professional Football club Bristol Rovers FC takes the top spot on our list. They compete in League two which is the fourth tier of the English Football League System. Bristol Rovers FC was founded on 1st August 1883 and they started playing Football League in 1920. They maintained their League Status before facing relegations in 2011 and 2014.
However, after finishing second in the Conference, they immediately regained their League Status with a victory in the 2015 Play-off Final. At the end of the 2015-16 season, they secured Promotion out of League two Status. They are nicknamed The Pirates and The Gas.
Bristol Rovers FC mostly plays their games at the Memorial Stadium. They have won the Gloucestershire Cup 32 times, The Third Division in 1932, and the Watney Cup in 1972. Apart from it, they have also qualified for Football League Trophy Finals two times.
Bristol Rovers FC has been relegated six times in 1961–62, 1980–81, 1992–93, 2000–01, 2010–11, and 2013–14 season. Therefore, they attain the top spot on our list of Top 10 Relegated teams in 2023.
2. Chester City FC
Chester Based English Football club Chester City FC takes the 2nd spot on our list. They are the current member of National League North which is the sixth tier League for English Football and they play at the Deva Stadium. The club came into existence in 2010 after the liquidation of Chester City.
Chester City FC were originally founded as Chester FC in 1885 and it joined Football League ahead of the 1931-32 season. The club changed its name to Chester City in 1983. The club mostly took part in the 3rd and fourth Tier of the Football League. However, they were relegated to the Football conference in 2000. The club came back in Football League after winning the Conference title in 2004.
After facing relegation for the 3rd time in 2009, the club was hit with financial difficulties. In 2014, they again faced relegation after finishing the season in 21st position. Moreover, they also held 23rd position in the 2017-18 League season and were relegated for the 5th time in history.
Therefore, Chester City FC takes the 2nd spot on our list with 5 relegations in Football History.
3. Lincoln City FC
Next, we have Lincoln-based English football Club Lincoln City FC at the 3rd spot on our list. They compete in the EFL League one which is the third tier of the English Football League. They are nicknamed Imps after the Legend of Lincoln Imp. The Club was founded in 1884 on the venue of Sincil Bank.
Lincoln City FC is one of the founding members of the Football League Third Division which was founded in 1921. They were first relegated in 1934-35 seasons after winning the League in 1932. However, they became Third division north Champions in 1947-48 and were again relegated the next year.
After the Two successive relegations, the Club could not win promotions and were demoted to the Fourth Divison in 1962. The Club was once again Relegated in the 1978-79 league season but promoted again two years later. Soon, they found a double relegation and were demoted to the Conference in 1987.
At the end of 1997-98, they found a short promotion which lead them to another relegation the following year. For the next few Seasons Club did well and was promoted only to find another relegation in at the end of the 2010-11 season.
With 6 relegations to their name, Chester City claims the 3rd spot on our list of 10 Relegated English Football clubs in 2023.
4. Grimsby Town FC
Another English Professional Football club Grimsby Town FC earns the 4th spot on our list. They are based in Cleethorpes, North East Lincolnshire and they compete in the National League which is the 5th Tier of the English Football League. The Club was founded by Grimsby Pelham Football Club in 1878 and they are nicknamed The Mariners.
The Club moved to its current Stadium in 1898. After the first World War, the club was relegated to the New Third Division. They did well in the next two decades but again found a Relegation after the first full season post World War 2. Until 1977 they enjoyed the Third Division before relegation, but they were soon promoted again in 1979.
In 1987-88 they faced another relegation which took them to the Fourth Division. For the next few seasons, they avoided relegation with their successful campaigns. However, the club faced another relegation in 2002-03 after enjoying five consecutive seasons at Division one.
In 2020, following a 3-2 defeat against Exeter, the Club found another relegation which brought them back to the National League. The mariners have taken 5 relegations in their history and they enjoy the 4th spot on our list of 10 Relegated English Football Clubs.
5. Stockport County FC
At number 5, we have the English Football Club Stockport Country FC from the town of Stockport, England. The Club competes in the National League which is the 5th Tier of the English Football League System. Stockport Country FC Club was founded in 1883 as Heaton Norris Rovers.
However, they were renamed in 1890 after the Country Borough of Stockport. They are nicknamed The Hatters after the country’s local Hat-making industry.
After winning the Third division Title in 1936-37, the club won promotion to the 2nd division. However, they finished at the bottom in the next season and found their first relegation to the Third division. After winning the1966-67 Fourth Divison, they again returned to Third Division. However, they were demoted to the fourth division in 1969-70 and they remain in that status till 1991.
Stockport Country did well in the next few seasons but found two relegations in 2003 and 2011. Despite their full efforts, they were relegated to the Conference League first time in their history.
With four Relegations in their history, Stockport Country FC earns their name on the list of Relegated English Football Clubs.
6. Accrington Stanley FC
Next we have another English Football club named accrington Stanley FC on our list at the 6th spot. The Accrington, Lancashire cased Football Club competes in third tier of the English football League. The Club was founded in October 1968 at Crown Ground venue. Accrongton Stanley FC are also known as Stanley, The Owd Reds and Accy.
Orignally, Accrington Stanely FC were founded as Accrington Team in 1891 and they took part in Football League in from 1921 to 1962. The Owd Reds were promoted to First Division Premier League in 1991, however they conceded their first relegation in 1999. They also failed to win a single game in 2007-08 seasons of FA Cup and League Cup which eventually took them to another relegation to the Third Dvision of EFL.
Now, Accrington Stanely FC join our list of Relegated English Football Clubs 2023 list.
7. Torquay United FC
Torquay Based English Football Club named Torquay United FC take the 7th spot on our list. As of now, they compete in the National League of English Football League System. The Club was founded in 1899 at the venue of Plainmoo and they are nicknamed The Gulls.
After playing lower Leagues, Torquay United FC were admitted to the Football League in 1927. They remained the part of the League for the next 31 years before facing their first relegation in 1962. However, they soon found a promotion to the only to hit by another relegation in 1972.
In 1991, they were promoted again to the third Division, but were again relegated the next year. In 2003, they got an automatic promotion but they were relegated for the fourth relegation in 2007 after finishing at the bottom of the League Two.
Torquay United FC lost the Football League Status for the second time in their history in 2014. Four Year Later, they were relegated from the National League in 2018 as well. With 2 relegations from Football League, Torquay United FC hold their name on our list of Relegated English Football Clubs in 2023.
8. Wimbledon FC
Wimbeldon Based Former English Football Club Wimbeldon FC claim the 8th spot on our list. They remained a non-League Club most of their history. The Club was founded in 1889 as Wimbledon Old Centrals and they were nicknamed The Dons and The Wombles. After being elected to the Football League in 1977, they reached the First Division in 1986. Surprisingly, they only played nine Season with the First Division.
Wimbeldon FC successfully debuted in the Football League season 1977-78 and they found a promotion in in 1978-79. However, a year later they were hit by a relegation to the Fourth Division. Apart from it, 12 years after their victory in FA Cup, they were again relegated to the second Tier in 2000. After this, they relocated to Milton Keneys despite opposition from the fans.
Now, they take their place on our list of Relegated English Football Clubs in the history of the game.
9. Barnet FC
Edware based English Football Club Barnet FC take the 9th spot on our list. They compete in the National League of English Football League system. The Club was founded in 1888 at the Hive Stadium and they are nicknamed The Bees. After being promoted to the Football League in 1991, they got relegated the next year.
In 2001, they were again relegated to the Conference, but they came back to the Football League after 4 years. They spent the next eight season with the League Two, but they relegated back to the Conference in 2013. They won the Conference Premier League title in 2015 and returned to the Football League for the thrid time. However, after lasting only three seasons, they got another relegation in 2018.
Therefore, Barnet FC claim their spot on our list of Relegated English Football Clubs in 2023.
10. Hereford United FC
Finally, we have Hereford based English Football club Herefore United FC making up the last spot on our list. In 2014, they were wound up in the High Courts after facing the debt around £1.3million. The Club was founded in 1924 at the Edgar Streat and they were nicknamed The Bulls.
After winning the 3rd division Title in 1975-76 season, they were promoted to the 2nd Division. However, they only lasted one season and got relegated the next year. However, Hereforrd United FC won the Conference Play Off Final in 2006 and were promoted out of League Two in 2007-08. Later, two consecutive relegations took them out of Non-League Football Status in 2012.
Thus, Hereford United FC take the final spot on our list for Relegated English Football clubs in the history.
